If you want to improve your school, just check with President Obama. He pays $ 4.35 billion to schools in America to make some improvements. MSNBC explains that anywhere wanting to “improve schools and close the achievement gap” can join the “Race to the Top” program that is this education initiative. The U.S. Department of education announced nine places to share the $ 3.4 billion: Florida, Georgia, Hawaii, Massachusetts, Maryland, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Rhode Island and Washington, D.C. Grant amounts per state can be announced later. There is more coming with a round of $ 350 million going to states that have different student assessment.
Change comes from more than just ‘Race to the Top’
States needing money are inspired by the “Race to the Top” grant. There were numerous moves for states to try and win “Race to the Top.” Two of these contain no cap on spending for charter schools and giving more accountability directives straight to the teachers. Round 2 of this was applied for by 35 states and also the District of Columbia. Of course, there were in July 19 finalists that were selected. Right now, there have been 46 states and the District of Columbia that have participated in “Race to the Top”.
Resistance from teachers unions and state education leaders
There hasn’t been universal approval for “Race to the Top”. According to MSNBC, teachers unions were uneasy about signing on to any reforms that would connect teacher evaluations with student standardized test performance, when various state education officials expressed concern as to whether or not getting into reforms within the “Race to the Top” would mean that school districts would be giving up too much control to the federal government.
American changes that are needed
Is seems like things are positive. This is especially true with the outlook. The nation has strong opinions on “Race to the Top” which Democrats for Education Reform released a public statement about. The statement addresses many civil rights and child advocacy groups and local business. The statement said the move was an excellent and bold one that should are done. The statement expressed the desire to have teachers unions work better with these groups to get a result desired by everybody in American schools.
